The Mari-Mari Store

May is Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month, so I wanted to take it back to my roots mixed with a little fashion. The first Asians documented in the Americas arrived in 1587, when Filipinos landed in California.

Being Fil-Am and growing up in Southern California has had its challenges, but I’m glad there was always a huge Filipino influence in my surrounding area. While my hometown didn’t exactly have much diversity, driving into the city was always a treat.

Not only was it a family bonding experience, but we always snagged our favorite goodies that weren’t available at our local store.

Philippine Brand dried mangoes were always a must. Nothing beats a fresh mango, but these specific dried mangoes are extremely delicious. Sugary sweet, soft, and chewy. Nothing you’d expect from a dried fruit.

Seeing the Philippine Brand crafted into a mini handbag by The Mari-Mari Store brought back all the memories. It’s cute, fashionable, and handmade with good intentions!

The Mari-Mari Store is dedicated to repurposing sari-sari store goodies aka convenience store items. Each item is made to order and the food inside the packaging is donated to various community fridges/pantries around LA. All materials are also bought from Filipino markets in order to keep money circulating within the Filipino community.

While the dried mango bag is a fan favorite, there are plenty of other options to choose from! From mini ube and pandan bags to larger rice tote bags. DM The Mari-Mari Store on Instagram to snag your own handmade bag!

I am proud to be Filipino. While I will admit I did struggle with not feeling “Filipino enough” in an American society, I realized many Fil-Am children have also felt the same sentiment. However, the Filipino community has always been extremely welcoming.

I’m happy that I can have little reminders that I can incorporate into my own style. And showcase my own unique person!
