DIY Summer Knits
With the arrival of the sunny season, my wardrobe needed a little revamp! While there are countless options available in stores, there's also something special about wearing a piece that you've created yourself. Crocheting different outfits is not only a satisfying and creative endeavor, but also an opportunity to showcase your personal style!
Learning how to crochet is actually super easy and anyone can start with a little patience and practice. Honestly, I was so hesitant to learn, but once I started it became one of my favorite activities! I’m still a beginner, yet I’ve been able to create a few wearable pieces that I love.
After learning the basics, I figured out a technique that turned out to be a specific crochet style called Tunisian crochet which combines both knitting and crochet. You still use a crochet hook, but the pattern is closer to a knit. It can also take a bit more time to finish a project, but the results create a beautiful fabric that is lightweight and perfect for summer.
Personally, I also found it easier to learn how to crochet with jumbo yarn rather than the regular yarn. Jumbo yarn allows you to work with your hands instead of the a crochet hook. This way you can easily identify each section of your project and train your eyes to recognize different patterns, stiches, and loops.
When I decided to tackle the idea of making clothes, I actually created a skirt and top set with different yarn colors. If you’re just starting out though, I suggest one color first! Having multiple skeins of yarn can get messy and tangled if you’re not carful. Which, I’m always a mess!
Picking the color of yarn for your outfit is actually pretty fun. Each one of your projects will have its own aesthetic and purpose, and the color palette should align with that vision. But ultimately, the choice of yarn colors for your crochet projects should reflect your personal taste and style. Trust your instincts and go with colors that resonate with you.
Crochet is an art form and your creations should bring you joy and satisfaction. It’s a fun way to create and customize your own designs using simple tools and materials. So grab a crochet hook and let your imagination come to life!
