#CreateWithChelle: Stars

Never dim your light for the sake of others.

Challenge 7: Light and Stars

Create With Chelle Stars

Required Tools:

Needle or thumbtack

Flashlight

You are a star! Showcase what makes you shine the brightest. Whether that means you excel at baking or are a great fashion stylist, add a bit of light to your image!

This challenge is another project where you don’t actually need to have any intense Photoshop or editing knowledge! It is just another fun activity you can do without having to sit at the computer for so many hours. I usually take my pieces back onto the computer though for any touch ups and light adjustments, not necessary if you are happy with the outcome.

There are only two steps to this. Poke holes into your picture with your needle or thumbtack. I use both to get different size holes for the light to shine through. After you’re happy with the poke placements, take a flashlight and shine it behind the image!

These images are my first tests to see if it would even work, haha!

Anyways, wherever you want the brightest star, focus the light through that hole as you are rephotographing your image so that you get the shine to flare out a bit. As you move your flashlight around, look through the viewfinder of your camera because the perspective of where the light actually is is different on camera than if you are looking at it in person.

If you want to take it a step further, capture multiple images of the light in different spots in order to merge and edit all the photos in Photoshop or any other editing program you use.

My Thoughts: I had a lot of fun with this! Getting the final image though was a bit of a time consuming process though. I had a general idea of how the light would work out, but I still had to do a bit of experimenting in order to get the results I wanted. It’s nice to be a little more crafty with my photography sometimes as it brings a change of pace to the normal editing routine.

I would like to try this again in the future if I have any other ideas! There’s so many things you can do with different patterns when creating the holes, I think it comes down to nailing the rephotographing technique and having the proper amount of light overall.

The only complaint that I kind of have is that the flashlight hurt my eyes! So, be wary of that if you happen to be sensitive to light…I like to take my time with trying to figure out what I like best, so shining light right into my face, even through a camera can be quite draining. Maybe wear sunglasses?
