HiBar Solid Shampoo & Conditioner

Did you know: more than 552 million shampoo bottles could end up in landfills every year! And only 1 in 5 people consistently recycle items from the bathroom. Getting rid of plastic in your shower is one small, easy step that can help reduce the amount of plastic usage in your everyday life.

HiBar is a great solution if you’ve been thinking about making the switch! Their solid shampoos and conditioners skip the need for plastic packaging. The packaging is actually both recyclable and compostable as the printing is derived from plant-based inks. Even their shipping materials are all compostable, recyclable or biodegradable!

These three key factors are extremely important to helping reduce waste on our planet. More importantly, HiBar has created a product that goes beyond recycling as not everyone actually recycles or has the ability to easily recycle. So, if your materials do end up in a landfill they will eventually break down and reduce the buildup of waste in order to create a healthier environment..

Biodegradable: The ability for materials to naturally break down in a year or less and return to nature. This is mostly for cardboard and some plastics.

Compostable: Similar to biodegradable, but materials that are compostable provide the earth with nutrients once completely broken down. This is great for gardeners!

what’s it like actually using solid shampoos and conditioners?

I’ll be honest, it’s a little bit of an adjustment! However, the results are amazing! I tried the Volumize Set as I always have crazy frizz and flyways, plus I wanted to bring a little more life back into my hair. And because I have to drag Lenny into trying products with me, I had him try the Moisturize Set.

On first try, the solid shampoo does take a little bit of effort to froth up, but afterwards it’s fine and feels just like any other liquid shampoo. After a few uses though it doesn’t seem like such an effort to use though, which is great! The conditioner was quite a puzzle for me, it’s almost laughable! I basically was brushing my hair with the bar since that felt like the easiest and best solution. I also tried rubbing it between my hands to get some product, but it didn’t ever feel like I had enough to run through my hair.

Of course, after trying to figure it out myself, I realized HiBar had posted instructions on how to properly use the bars on their Instagram! Thankfully the brushing technique was the right way to go, so I feel less silly about the whole process.

Both Lenny and I had to agree that the smell wasn’t our favorite part for either of the sets. Unfortunately, Lenny described it as generic hotel soap! However, he did like the Volumize scent a bit better as it was a little more citrusy. The aroma is only strong when removing the bars from the packaging as HiBar uses essential oils for their fragrances. During and after showering though, I noticed there was little to no fragrance clinging onto my hair.

After a few showers now, I don’t even feel like I’m invaded by any heavy scents. Even though I was judging based on first impressions, I’d say to just have a little patience in order to adjust to all the elements of using the shampoo and conditioner bars.

The pros of HiBar definitely outweigh the cons for me as I’m really happy with the results! My entire scalp and hair were totally clean after showering— no oily patches.  Yes…that actually happens at times whenever I use liquid shampoo. The Volumize Set brought back the little wavy texture I have, giving my hair a fuller appearance. Overall, my hair feels healthy and soft and that’s all I really want!

As far as Lenny’s experience goes with the Moisturize Set, he said it was okay. I know he loves sticking to certain products — especially his minty shampoos — but the fact that he gave it a try is more than I could ask for! He said he’d continue to try and use it, which is a push in the right direction! Little steps.

Final Thoughts: I love trying out new products, but for now I’m going to have to say goodbye to my regular liquid shampoos and conditioners! There’s no going back after seeing the results and knowing that HiBar has such a positive impact on the planet. Especially since the place we live doesn’t offer recycling pick-up. This just makes me feel so much better when trying to create a more sustainable lifestyle.
